Reels Fact Checker (Instagram: @reelsfactchecker) · Last updated: October 9, 2026
Reels Fact Checker is an Instagram messaging service. You send it a reel, and it replies with a fact-check of the reel's claims, with sources. This page explains what data we handle and why.
What we receive
- Your Instagram-scoped ID: an ID Meta gives us for your account, so we can reply to you.
- The messages you send us, including the reels you share (their link and caption) and usernames you mention.
- Public posts of a reel's creator, only if you tell us who posted the reel. We read them through Meta's official Instagram API to find that reel's video. This only works for public Business and Creator accounts.
We don't receive your password, contacts, location or anything outside the conversation with @reelsfactchecker.
How we use it
Only to fact-check the reels you send and to reply to you. To do that:
- For a shared reel, we usually check its caption (Instagram doesn't share the video with us).
- When a video is part of the check (a reel whose creator allows apps to access it), it's downloaded to a temporary folder, processed, and deleted right after the check. Its audio is sent to our speech-to-text provider (Soniox) to get a transcript, and deleted from their system right after.
- The caption, and the transcript and on-screen text when there's a video, are sent to AI model providers (through OpenRouter, restricted to hosts in the US and EU that don't train on or keep the data) to find claims and write the verdict.
- Search queries based on the reel's claims (not your personal data) are sent to a web search provider (Tavily).
What we keep
We don't sell your data, show ads or share it with anyone except the processors above. Technical logs (your Instagram-scoped ID, message type, timing and cost of each check) are kept by our hosting provider (Vercel) for up to 30 days to fix problems.
Not medical advice
Fact-checks are informational and can be wrong. They are not medical advice. Talk to a doctor before changing what you take or do.
Your choices
You can stop using the service at any time by not messaging us. To have your data deleted, see Data Deletion.
